Resolutions and making them stick this time!

January 7, 2015

Every year, around this time of year, conversations veer towards the question – What is your New Year’s Resolution? That start-of-the-year pledge, which may be a replay of the one(s) from last year, can range from reading more books and making time for friends and family, to quitting smoking, getting to the gym, “unplugging” or just having a more balanced life in 2015.

The act of making a resolution feels really empowering, but here-in lies the rub. John Norcross, psychologist and author of the book Changeology: 5 Steps to Realizing Your Goals and Resolutions states that many people don’t take the necessary steps to adjust their expectations and plan what they will do to make those resolutions happen. “The people who simply devised a resolution and were motivated but didn’t devise a plan have a 4% chance,” he says.

So you have a goal or objective, but do you have a plan? But more importantly, is the or are the resolution(s) you’ve declared bringing you closer to your intrinsic hopes for 2015? A question to ask yourself is this – Do you know what you really want in 2015?

These start-of-the-year pledges to take action have a greater chance of succeeding if, behind that pledge, there has been self-reflection, time to access where you have been, where you are now, where you want to go and how your chosen resolution gets you closer to that goal.

By investing in some “quiet, reflective, me-time,” you have the space to design your vision for 2015 and beyond. This could take the form of a workshop, a presentation, or even a structured discussion with a mentor or friend. Through the process, you might discover what really motivates you, what your blind-spots could be, and uncover the subtle self-limiting messages you may be telling yourself that have kept you from moving forward.

Become the architect of your life, make 2015 your year. Take time out, self-reflect, devise a plan, and then put that resolution into action!
